BS: In Class Music Video Response

"Isles" - Little Comets - 2010
  • This music video by the band "Little Comets" is a documenatary style video which shows the common stereotypes of working class British people. This representation is similar to the film "Fish Tank"  (Arnold, 2009) which gave a representation of the lives within gritty east London council estates, again touching upon common stereotypes within this life style. This similar inter-textual references are also filmed much alike, both on a small budget which I feel is a good way to emphasize the subject matter.

  • Because the music video is filmed in such a way it seems like a more personal reflection as it is done using an extremely low fi video with a small budget and is likely to be done mainly by the band members themselves portrays the video to be more personal to the band and further reinforcing their background and therefore their band image
  • Although the genre of music is different from the track we are considering our group can still take inspiration from "Isles". Personally I like the overall look, that makes it almost purposely look unstable and think it is a very effective way of emphasizing the message of the piece and feel that particular shots would work well within our piece, for example the color wash/ grading of the shots adds depth to the message and is perhaps something for us to consider in the sections we want to make seem more dull and sad.

Massive Attack - Live With Me - 2010

  • This video is different from the Little Comets track but uses some similar techniques to create certain emotions. This video presents a theme of loneliness and a feeling of sorrow and dismay depicting a middle age woman drinking to excess.
  • The inspiration we can take from this to our own video would be learning to create a representation of a character, but clearly not this exact representation as it does not tie into our narrative, but may be applicable when the male character is sad, and again like the other video uses a gritty dark overlay
