MB: In Class Music Video Response


  • The video to "Isles" by Little Comets is very interesting in the sense that it is supposedly representing common, everyday British people, somewhat stereotypically. The documentary style of filming is rather interesting as while it doesn't show a clear narrative, the traces of one can be seen in the everyday lives of these people
  • However, upon closer inspection of the video, it can be seen that the video is set in the city of Belfast. A city that has faced much turmoil over it's place in Britain. Perhaps there is a greater depth of meaning to the video, showing these people to be everyday British people, as opposed to the rest of Ireland
  • One of the main features in the video that is worth taking note of is the use of colour grading. This could be incredibly useful in our video, in establishing the difference between the world where the protagonist is wearing the binoculars, with bright and "happy" colours, and the world where he is not, represented in a saturated, grey wash, as in this video


  • The video to "Live With Me" by Massive Attack is similar in the sense that the colour grading has a part to play in the representation of the main character's situation. Somewhat dull and undesirable
  • But more important that the colour grading, the composition of shots is essential in this representation. At the beginning of the video the shots are steady, but as the character drinks more and more, the camera becomes shaky and handheld, reflecting her demise into an inebriated state
  • While we want to represent someone feeling alone in the world in our own music video, we do not want it too this extent, as this represents depression, whereas we want to portray mere sadness
  • While the shaky style of camera is beneficial to this particular video, I do not think the same effect would be achieved in our video, and it perhaps best to stick to the idea of colour grading to reflect the situation of the protagonists


  • The video to The Family Rain's "Don't Waste Your Time" is a good representation of what we aim to do with our own video
  • This video starts in a grey and dull looking pub, reflecting the negative feelings of the people around. However, when the man starts singing, the mood lifts, and the colours become bright and happy
  • In our video, the binoculars will act as the man; the tool for changing the mood from sad to happy, as through the binoculars, the protagonist is able to see the world he wants
